The BJJ purple belt marks the start of the advanced ranks in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The IBJJF reserves it for players aged 16 and over, after at least two years at blue. In reality it usually comes four to six years after the first class, and it changes your place in the academy.

IBJJF rules for the purple belt

Three official conditions frame this rank.

ConditionIBJJF rule
Minimum age16
Time at blue belt2 years minimum
Time before brown18 months minimum

There is an exception for young players. At 16, a green belt teenager moves to the adult system, and the coach can award purple directly. It is rare, and almost always concerns teenagers who have been rolling since age 5 or 6. The kids' system is explained in our guide to BJJ belts.

The level expected on the mat

A blue belt survives and lands a few techniques. A purple belt imposes a plan. That is the clearest difference between the two ranks.

A game of your own

A purple belt has an identity you can sum up in a sentence: "she pulls half guard and hunts the back", "he passes with pressure and finishes with the kimura". A partner who has rolled with them three times knows what is coming, and still cannot always stop it.

Chains, not single attacks

From closed guard, a purple belt does not try one armbar and give up. They move from the armbar to the triangle, from the triangle to the omoplata or a sweep, depending on the defense. The links between the armbar and the triangle choke become reflexes.

Defense without panic

Back taken, mounted, tight choke coming in: the purple belt copes. They know when a submission is real and when there is still room to defend. They tap less out of fear and more out of clear judgment.

The ability to explain

Many coaches ask their purple belts to help beginners. Explaining a mount escape to someone who has never rolled quickly shows what you really understand.

Techniques allowed in competition

Under IBJJF rules, wrist locks are legal from adult blue belt. Kneebars, toe holds and biceps or calf slicers stay banned until brown. At purple, leg attacks in competition are therefore limited to the straight ankle lock. The full table is in IBJJF rules and points. Adult purple belt matches last 7 minutes.

How long from blue to purple, really

The IBJJF minimum is two years. In most academies, two to three years is a realistic range for an adult training two or three times a week. Regular competitors sometimes get there faster, because competition exposes their holes and forces them to fix them.

Injuries are the big variable. A shoulder or knee that keeps you out for three months delays the promotion less through lost time than through the fear of rolling that follows. For any pain that persists, see a doctor before going back to sparring. Coming back too early costs more than waiting.

Blue belt habits that block the purple belt

Stuck blue belts tend to share the same three habits.

The first is the one-move game. Someone who knows only one pass or one attack becomes predictable, and the purple belts in the room shut it down without effort.

Panic cardio is next. You gas out in two minutes because you push when you should be adjusting position.

The last is having no back game, top or bottom. A blue belt who can neither take nor defend the back will struggle to convince anyone.

What changes when you get it

Blue belts look at you differently. You are now a reference for some and a target for others. Rolls against browns and blacks get closer, which is a new and exciting feeling.

The trap is thinking you are done with the basics. The purple belts who stall are the ones who only drill their two favorite techniques. Bottom half guard, for example, is often forgotten by players who built a top game.

The purple belt seen from judo

A judoka will find no clear equivalent. On the ground, a BJJ purple belt is well ahead of a judo black belt who has not specialized in ne-waza (groundwork). Standing, it is often the other way around. We compare the two arts in BJJ vs judo, and the place of purple in the overall journey is on our Brazilian jiu-jitsu page.

Before you get it

If you are a four-stripe blue and purple is taking its time, look at your rolls honestly. Almost always, the same thing is missing: a position you are bad at and keep avoiding. For many, it is bottom side control. For others, it is the back.

For six weeks, start every roll in that position. You will lose a lot, then a little less. Log your successful escapes each week, in a notebook or in Jutrack, and you will see the curve move. Your coach will see it too.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum age for a BJJ purple belt?

16 under IBJJF rules. A green belt teenager moving to the adult system at 16 can, at the coach's discretion, go straight to purple.

How long do you have to be a blue belt before purple?

The IBJJF requires at least two years at blue belt. In practice, two to three years is common.

Is a BJJ purple belt good?

Yes. It is the first advanced rank. A purple belt handles most grapplers from other sports on the ground and often starts helping coach classes.

How long do you stay a purple belt?

The IBJJF minimum is eighteen months before brown. Many people stay two years or more.
